Two groups sent at the request of Arab tribes to teach Islam are betrayed. At ar-Raji’ a party of six (ten in another report) is attacked; Khubaib and Zaid bin ad-Dathinah are sold to Quraish and killed in Makkah. At the well of Ma’unah a party of reciters, forty by Ibn Ishaq’s count or seventy by the Sahih’s, is surrounded and killed; the book calls them seventy of the best believers.
As the book dates it: Safar, 4 A.H.
