Quraish sign a pact, hung inside the Ka’bah, refusing all trade and marriage with Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib until they hand the Prophet ﷺ over. The clan withdraws to the narrow valley (shi’b) of Abu Talib, where for three years they are driven to eat leaves and skins, and the cries of hungry children can be heard.
